VEX Choir is an avant-garde singing project grounded in experimentation, improvisation and feeling. Loose prompts direct us and our ears and intuition guide us.
Singing, listening and breathing with others is the best feeling in the world! Bring a water bottle and an open mind.
There is no focus on performance, written repertoire, membership or fees. Occasionally, audio is recorded for posterity.
VEX was formed by Larissa Loyva in 2025 as an anti-capitalist experiment to engage singers and non-singers alike. We strive to connect with our voices – literally and figuratively – and explore autonomy from traditional music forms, venues and the expectations of performance.
Working from prompts and exercises like that of the Fluxus movement, composers such as Pauline Oliveros, and even occasionally reading the artwork in the gallery as a score, the choir aims to sit with the practice of the voice and of deep listening.
Because the choir is not working toward a performance, members may attend when they wish (drop-in style). VEX requires no commitment! Membership is open to all SCA students, faculty, and staff, as well as non-SFU folks who wish to sing!
Larissa Loyva (she/her) is a composer and singer whose musical experience spans pop, rock, experimental, electronic and classical. She has contributed to numerous Vancouver recordings and has released four solo albums as Kellarissa.
